Counterfeit Activity – Real Impact

A global brand with retail product turned to C3i after ‘exhausting’ their own avenues and spending a great deal of money to achieve very little tangible results. The brand had identified they had a very significant issue in Europe as their sales had dropped by 25% in volume, 35% in value while market data showed extensive exposure and offerings of their retail products.

The Threat

The threat…… A global brand with retail product turned to C3i after ‘exhausting’ their own avenues and spending a great deal of money to achieve very little tangible results. The brand had identified they had a very significant issue in Europe as their sales had dropped by 25% in volume, 35% in value while market data showed extensive exposure and offerings of their retail products. Upon the assumption that counterfeit product was prolific in the 3 of the European markets they engaged their internal legal and Brand Protection teams to detect the activity. They carried out multiple test purchases and discovered the counterfeits but had not been able to trace the product back to any specific seller or details.



The investigation……

C3i reviewed the information provided and worked with the Brand Protection team to understand the market and the seller activity in the market. Within a couple of weeks C3i had detected a seller network across multiple platforms that appeared to be coordinated. Evidential Test Purchases were arranged and when these were received these items were profiled and compared against ‘genuine’ products.

This analysis confirmed the product was counterfeit and also proved that the items bought from multiple sellers were all from the same manufacturing source. Using our charting, mapping, investigation techniques and processes we identified a person of interest and associated addresses. C3i carried out surveillance on the target, gathered intelligence and evidenced selling and delivery activity over a few days.

This evidence and intelligence formed the basis of a comprehensive case report that was presented to the Brand and was also later passed to appropriate law enforcement. The data collated confirmed that this person was responsible for selling more of these retail products into the UK market than the brand itself in the previous 12 months.

The brand engaged external lawyers and despite their focused efforts they also were unable to develop any intelligence that led to any seller or manufacturer therefore no tangible action could be taken. At this point the brand turned to C3i.

The impact……

The brand gave us authorisation to engage directly with the seller which we did in a controlled and professional manner. This led to the arrest of the target and the seizure of significant volumes of counterfeit product and shutting down the selling activity. The case file presented to law enforcement and the related arrest and seizure not only ceased the activity but also led to a successful Proceeds of Crime order.

In addition, C3i gained intelligence from the target about his sourcing practices and the manufacturing companies. This remains active intelligence as the Brand builds more evidence to take action in the country where these factories are located. “When we passed this case to C3i it was our last option. The benefits from this engagement and case were tangible and easy to measure. The POCA funds were extensive, sales data of the brand rebounded within a few weeks while price points recovered and consumer experiences and reviews were protected and improved over the following 3 months.
